A Healthy College Lifestyle

Living a healthy lifestyle during the college years is a vital ingredient in forming a solid foundation for long term health. While many students go through drastic changes in health and physicality, there are areas where minor lifestyle changes can have a major impact on overall well being.

Many incoming freshman begin their college careers without a set plan as far as health goes. Without viable healthy alternatives to campus food, and with surrounding fast food, the convenience factor becomes overwhelming. Students snack on candy bars and soda from the vending machines instead of buying fruit or juices to ease those late night cravings. With some planning and moderate discipline, students can learn that it is not terribly difficult to live a healthier lifestyle.

When stocking the dorm room or apartment with food, go for fruits and healthy snacks instead of the heavy chocolate bars and greasy noodles. Instead of getting the soda, grab some orange juice or low fat milk. When preparing food, or eating at the dining halls, make sure to select a variety of foods. Start with a small salad and eat in moderation. It is always better to eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day than to overload one or two meals. Overeating at one time can cause problems with sugar levels and hurt your metabolism.

Along with eating smart, physical activity is extremely important to staying fit and in shape. At the start of any semester, everyone on campus hits the gym and goes for a jog daily. After a month the gym is empty and workout routines have gone out the window. The main reason for this drop is grueling routines and over exerting during activities. When developing a workout plan, make sure to stay within yourself. Get a solid thirty minutes a day in of some kind of physical activity, and visit the gym or get some cardio work in a few times a week. It always helps to have a workout partner to motivate you and help you stick with the routine. Consistency is the key for physical activities; make sure to have a plan and stick with it in order to maintain an optimal level of healthiness.

Smart eating habits and disciplined workout routines are the biggest factors in keeping up with your health while in school. Make good decisions and have a set plan in order to stay healthy throughout your college career.
